The Department of Neurosurgery is a maximum-care unit at the University Hospital Essen serving more than 3,500/10,000 inpatients/outpatients per year. We strive for optimum solutions in the treatment of any neurosurgical condition, particularly encouraging preclinical research with a strong focus on forward and reverse bench-to-bedside translations.
Within the local DKTK network, we closely interact with the DKFZ Division of Translational Oncology / Neurooncology at the West German Cancer Center (Prof. Dr. Björn Scheffler) and with the Division of Clinical Neurooncology at the Department of Neurology (Prof. Dr. Martin Glas). Specific mutual interests relate to the discovery of innovative treatment concepts in the care of patients suffering from glioma, meningioma, and metastasized CNS disease. We conduct exploratory studies to further diagnostic and biomarker research as well as novel imaging solutions, and we develop clinical study designs optimizing photon/proton treatment strategies. We furthermore actively participate in multicentric, DKTK-wide clinical studies, e.g. NOA-16, a phase I study in high grade glioma investigating mutation-specific IDH1 peptide vaccines in combinatorial treatment designs.
