Program
Cancer Immunotherapy (CI)
Summary
Sebastian Theurich is a board-certified specialist in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Oncology and serves as Associate Professor and Senior Attending Physician at LMU University Hospital, Munich, Germany. Clinically, he leads the interdisciplinary hemato-oncologic outpatient unit and the multiple myeloma research program of his department. He is the Principal Investigator of numerous randomized clinical trials, including several investigator-initiated trials (IITs) in the field of hematology, with a particular focus on plasma cell disorders and immunotherapy. In addition, he heads the translational Cancer- and Immunometabolism Research Group at the Gene Center of LMU as Principal Investigator, where his team aims to understand and harness the metabolic regulation of immune responses against cancer.
In line with his clinical expertise, Sebastian Theurich’s clinical and translational research focuses on understanding and exploiting the metabolic pathways that regulate anti-tumor immunity. His work investigates how metabolic factors within the local tumor microenvironment, as well as systemic conditions such as obesity and obesity-associated inflammation, shape these complex immune networks. Ultimately, his research aims to develop immunometabolic interventions as novel therapeutic strategies against cancer, with multiple myeloma serving as a particularly relevant and promising disease model.
