Summary

Immune evasion

Immune surveillance and the resulting efficient adaptive immune response is a prerequisite to control malignant transformation. However, many types of tumors have evolved sophisticated evasion strategies to deceive the immune system, representing major obstacles for efficient anti-tumor immune responses. Here, not only pro-inflammatory mechanisms but also regulatory and even suppressive pathways crucially contribute to the efficiency of an immune response. Hence, a detailed understanding of these often tumor- and micro milieu-specific escape mechanisms is central to develop effective immunotherapies.

Employing genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and sophisticated molecular biology approaches on a population-based as well as single cell level, our group is deciphering mechanisms of innate and adaptive immunity and tolerance. Here, we specifically focus on cellular communication within the immune system but also across systems in a complex organ network to better understand immune responses in a context- and tissue-specific manner.
