13th Munich Cancer Retreat

The 13th Munich Cancer Retreat (MCR13), held on May 19-20, 2026 at the Evangelische Akademie Tutzing, once again brought together scientists, clinicians, physician scientists, and early career researchers from the DKTK partner site Munich for two days of scientific exchange and interdisciplinary networking.

The retreat highlighted recent advances in translational oncology across the DKTK research pillars Therapeutic Innovations and Diagnostic Innovations & Molecular Prevention, while also providing a platform for DKTK Working Groups, and Joint Funding projects.

This year’s program covered a broad spectrum of topics including AI-supported oncology, liquid biopsy diagnostics, organoid and 3D cancer models, microbiome-based approaches, spatial transcriptomics, CAR-T cell therapies, and cancer prevention research. Numerous presentations by early career scientists demonstrated the dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment within the Munich DKTK community.

A dedicated workshop program for early career scientists focused on Prompt Engineering for Science and funding opportunities for young scientists. The retreat further included poster sessions, scientific discussions, and networking activities fostering collaborations across disciplines and institutions.

A particular highlight of MCR13 were the keynote lectures by internationally renowned experts. Prof. Dr. Mihaela Žigman (Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics and Institute of Pathology at LMU) presented innovative approaches in broadband infrared diagnostics and their translational potential for cancer research. Prof. Núria Malats (Spanish National Cancer Research Centre, CNIO, Madrid) shared insights into genetic and molecular epidemiology and its relevance for cancer prevention and precision oncology. Dr. William Hill (Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, University of Manchester) discussed mechanisms and signals driving lung cancer promotion and progression.

Beyond the scientific sessions, the retreat provided valuable opportunities for personal exchange and networking among members of the DKTK community. The informal Scientific Walk & Talk along Lake Starnberg, the Wilko Weichert run & swim in the morning and the evening get-together created additional space for discussion and new collaborations.

The retreat concluded with the presentation of awards for the Best Talk to Luisa Flohé (Children's Cancer Research Center, TUM Klinikum) and Best Poster to Dilara Karaoglu (Institute of Pathology, LMU), both early career researchers, recognizing outstanding scientific contributions and supporting future scientific exchange through travel grants.

The organizers thanked all speakers, participants, and contributors for making the 13th Munich Cancer Retreat a successful and inspiring event and expressed their anticipation for the next edition of the retreat.
